Refiners on the LBMA Good Delivery List already operate under responsible sourcing programmes aligned to OECD due-diligence guidance, requiring documented provenance for every input. What has changed is the tooling: chain-of-custody data that once lived in PDFs is increasingly recorded as tamper-evident entries against a specific lot.
The immediate beneficiaries are licensed mid-tier producers. They generate exactly the documentation the frameworks demand, at volumes large enough to matter and structures simple enough to audit, unlike aggregated artisanal supply where provenance breaks at the first intermediary.
Why this is a crypto story
Every credible gold-backed token eventually collides with the same problem. A vault attestation proves metal exists; it does not prove where it came from or under what conditions it was produced. Provenance data closes that gap and turns compliance overhead into a marketable property of the token itself.
Our Burlcore Mining field report from Busia, Uganda looks at how one licensed operator documents that pipeline end to end, and why we regard source-level verification as the strongest available signal of legitimacy in the tokenised commodity market.
