Why the Lake Victoria gold belt is East Africa's most important gold address

The greenstone belts around Lake Victoria have produced gold for a century. Here is how the geology works, which Ugandan districts sit on it, and how licensed operators are structured.

Most of East Africa's commercial gold comes from a single geological family: the Archaean greenstone belts wrapped around the Lake Victoria basin. The same rocks that host Tanzania's Geita and Bulyanhulu mines continue north across the border into south-eastern Uganda.

The geology in plain terms

Greenstone belts are ancient volcanic and sedimentary sequences, metamorphosed and folded over billions of years. Gold in these systems typically sits in quartz veins along shear zones, and in weathered near-surface material where those veins have broken down. That combination is why the belt supports both large industrial mines and enormous numbers of artisanal workings: the shallow material is genuinely accessible with hand tools, while the deeper vein systems need capital.

The Ugandan districts on the belt

In Uganda the belt runs through the Eastern Region and the districts fringing the lake, with Busia and Namayingo the best-known gold addresses. Busia in particular has a long documented history of small-scale workings around Tiira, and is now also the base for licensed medium-scale production, including Burlcore Mining operations.

The Lake Victoria belt does not lack gold. It has historically lacked the formal structures that let that gold be traced, taxed and financed.

Who operates on the Ugandan side

The Ugandan side of the belt is a mix of artisanal and small-scale miners, medium-scale licensed producers and exploration-stage licence holders, with the Uganda National Mining Company holding the state's commercial interest under the Mining and Minerals Act 2022. Medium-scale operators such as Burlcore Mining Uganda occupy the segment where formalisation actually happens: large enough to run documented processing and reporting, small enough to work directly with surrounding communities.

Why this matters for tokenised gold

Provenance is the whole game for gold-backed digital assets. A belt with a strong artisanal presence is exactly where chain-of-custody documentation is hardest and most valuable. Licensed operators on the belt that can evidence origin, assay and custody are the only credible feedstock for a tokenised gold product.

Which Ugandan districts sit on the gold belt?
Principally districts in the Eastern Region fringing the lake, with Busia and Namayingo the most prominent gold-producing districts.
Who mines the Ugandan side of the belt?
A mix of artisanal and small-scale miners, licensed medium-scale producers such as Burlcore Mining, exploration licence holders, and the state through the Uganda National Mining Company.
